Chateneauf Du Pape Grape Hod

SKU 668466F
Price

£345.00

A vintage French grape hod, known in French as a hotte, in galvanised metal, bearing the name and coat of arms of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These hods were worn on the back by vineyard workers during the harvest, carried across the vineyards of the southern Rhône as grapes were picked by hand. The crest shows two crossed keys entwined, emblem of the historic papal commune and is painted across the front. As mechanical picking has taken over, these traditional hods have become increasingly rare. Dates broadly to 1880–1940, most likely circa 1900. In a domestic setting it works as a log holder, an umbrella stand, or a striking plant vessel for a dramatic dried or fresh arrangement as shown here. The patina and wear are part of it.

Available in orange, grey or green.
